Aeres Group published a report on their participation at World Design Forum 2012:

Aeres op World Design Forum 2012
Published 22 november 2012 at aeresgroup.nl

In de woorden van Verstegen: ‘The challenge for agriculture is to reconnect to the local community.’

We are looking back at a very succesfull third edition of World Design Forum. An edition full of innovations. Literally and figuratively. We were proud to be the opening event at the enchanting RoundHouse at the Klokgebouw, Behind the Curtain. A special 360-degree presentation space, in the heart of the Dutch Design Week, a perfect WDF venue where new connections between professionals, business associates, sponsors and media have come into being.

WDF was visited and noticed by national and international media. A selection of publications:

Demotix.com: “The third World Design Forum in Eindhoven was held in ‘Behind the Curtain’, an innovative, flexible and easy to install circular setting able to host up to 300 people and provide immersive (360 degree) multimedia content .”

DDW Tabloid: “It seems if we want to spark true social change we can do so by seeing ourselves as actors within our institutions, and if we want to add social value we should be open to making connections and alliances in unexpected ways.”

“I’ve just spent an extremely enjoyable 36 hours or so in The Netherlands at the World Design Forum. It was held in Eindhoven just before the launch party for Dutch Design Week, to which I was also very kindly invited by John Thackara and Jill Lauret”, as to quote Doug Belshaw, one of WDF’s key note speakers.

“Accompanying me on the trip was Tim Riches, CEO of DigitalMe. We spoke on Open Badges: I did the macro overview stuff and he drilled down into the details of the projects for which he’s using badges, such as S2R Medals. There were plenty of people afterwards who wanted to think through how they could be used in their particular context – from Design students to government agencies wanting to promote certain behaviours.

It was an extremely well-organised event held in possibly the most inspiring and best-equipped venue in which I’ve ever had the privilege to present. As you’ll be able to see from the photograph above, WDF2012 was located in an old factory building with the ‘room’ itself was bounded by long white strings. These allowed you to get in and out at any point of the perimeter, but there was enough material on the ‘walls’ to project images, video, etc. from the multitude of projectors facing out from the centre of the room. Add some atmospheric lighting, spot-on audio/visual work, and you’ve got the recipe for an epic venue.

Thankfully, most of the speakers were engaging, informative and entertaining. There was everything from crowdsourcing a morning rush hour problem relating to the raising and lowering of a bridge in Rotterdam to helping victims of torture and abuse tell their stories anonymously on video. Afterwards we went to what I wan to call a restaurant, but was nothing like I’ve seen before. It was like being round at someone’s house for a party: there were long tables, and a kind of ‘kitchen’ area, and food served out of drawers. You’ll be able to look at the photos of this when I upload them – it was extremely conducive to informal dining and conversation. …”

The prelude to the Dutch Design Week, the World Design Forum (WDF), was held on Friday 19 October at the iconic Klokgebouw building. The location, a disused factory building from the 1930s, has found a new lease of life as a cultural hotspot. This proved almost symbolic for the themes that kept returning in the various lectures, films, and debates at the third edition of WDF.

Change is in the air
We are living in a time of tremendous social and economic upheaval and it feels as if change is in the air. The old institutions are no longer serving the people living today. How to bring society and its institutions back in line? How to spark a new sense of connectivity? How to ignite social enterprise?

The rise of the networks
An impressive range of experts and speakers tackled these questions initially voiced by Eindhoven’s Alderman for Innovation, Culture and Public Space, Mary-Ann Schreurs. Elevate Health, Mozilla Badges, Helsinki Design Lab, WITNESS: the speakers all predicted the end of the pyramid as the dominant organizational structure, and the rise of the networks. The top-down model of doing things is no longer satisfactory as people have come to expect to have a say in matters which concern them directly.

Value creation by co-creation
The pyramid is on its way out. It implies a closed and bureaucratic organizational model with no regard for the people who depend on its functioning and no real exchange of supply and demand. Instead, what we will see, according to today’s experts, is networks taking over. The main characteristic of these networks is that they are communities, not hierarchies. The relationships between the members of the network will be mutually dependent and horizontal. Value is created by collaborating, by co-creating.

We create, therefore we are unique
But how to implement such ideas within existing institutions? Could designers play a role in restructuring housing corporations, local and national governments, care institutions? Keynote speaker Caroline Hummels, Professor of Industrial Design at TU/e, warns that design is not magic. She predicts that a shift is needed in the way we see ourselves as human beings and the kind of society and the values we want to pass on. A shift away from the ‘prominence of the spreadsheet’, the idea that our institutions cannot make a decision unless it is backed by files filled with irrefutable facts; a move towards the idea that as people we are unique because we create, not because we think. Or having an idea, jumping in and getting things done. In the final round table the idea is picked up. It seems if we want to spark true social change we can do so by seeing ourselves as actors within our institutions, and if we want to add social value we should be open to making connections and alliances in unexpected ways.
